Ever fed a prompt into AI, read the output, and thought…

"Wow. This is actually better than what I would’ve written."

If so, you’re not alone.

I hear this all the time—especially from people who don’t consider themselves “writers.”

They love how AI makes their ideas sound polished, professional, and structured. It takes their messy thoughts and turns them into something clean and coherent.

It’s almost TOO good.

And that’s the problem.

Because “clean and coherent” doesn’t mean you’re actually connecting with your readers.

Why AI’s Writing Feels “Better” (But Isn’t)

AI writes with a certain… smoothness. No weird detours, no overthinking, no staring at a blank screen for 20 minutes. It just flows.

It also:
✅ Uses well-formed sentences.
✅ Has perfect grammar.
✅ Organizes ideas neatly.

But let’s be real: AI’s writing can feel hollow.

It lacks the quirks, grit, and vulnerability that make writing human. It’s too balanced. Too symmetrical. Too predictable.

And when you compare its polished output to your own self-doubt-ridden, rough-draft mess? Of course, it feels better.

But here’s the hard truth: The best writing isn’t “better.” It’s bolder.

And AI doesn’t do bold.

The 3 Biggest Traps of AI Writing

If you prefer AI’s writing to your own, you’re likely falling into one (or all) of these traps:

1. The Perfection Trap

AI makes everything sound grammatically flawless. But perfect writing is forgettable.

Compare:

  • AI: “This book is a must-read for entrepreneurs.”

  • Human: “This book hit me like a caffeine overdose. I read it in one sitting, then immediately reworked my business strategy.”

One is “perfect.” The other makes you feel something.

2. The Predictability Trap

AI is trained to write what it thinks you want to hear—which means it’s always predictable.

For example, if you ask AI to write an email opening, you’ll get:
"In today’s fast-paced world, staying ahead is crucial..."

Yawn.

Instead, try starting with a personal quirk, an unfinished thought, or a challenge:
"I almost didn’t send this email. But then I realized, if you’re struggling with X, you need to hear this..."

3. The Voice Erasure Trap

This one is huge.

AI smooths out your writing so much that it erases your voice. And that’s a problem—because voice is what makes writing memorable.

It’s the reason you can read one line of a Seth Godin post and know it’s Seth Godin.

It’s why Gary Halbert’s sales letters still convert decades later.

And it’s why AI’s writing, no matter how “good,” often sounds like everyone else’s.

How to Reclaim Your Writing Style (Even If You Think AI Is Better)

AI is an amazing tool, but you should never let it out-write you. Here’s how to bring your own style back:

1. Break AI’s Symmetry

AI writes evenly spaced, perfectly structured sentences. Mess it up on purpose.

Try:
✅ Short sentences. Then a long, winding one that stretches on, twisting into unexpected directions before snapping back.
✅ Sentence fragments. Like this.
✅ Interrupting yourself—because humans do that all the time.

2. Add “Writing Tics” That AI Can’t Replicate

Every great writer has quirks.

  • Ramit Sethi: Uses “do this, not that” frameworks.

  • James Clear: Drops profound one-liners mid-paragraph.

  • Tim Urban: Writes as if he’s talking to you over coffee.

What’s your tic? Maybe you overuse ellipses… or make up words (like “humanizationification”).

Lean into it. AI won’t.

3. Start Wrong, Then Course-Correct

AI starts too clean. Humans start messy. Play with that:

  • “I was going to give you the usual advice. But that’s boring, so let’s do this instead…”

  • “Most people will tell you [common wisdom]. I don’t buy it. Here’s why…”

This instantly sounds like a person thinking, not an algorithm processing.

4. Tell a Story—Even a 1-Sentence One

AI sucks at storytelling unless explicitly prompted. You don’t have to write a novel—just a micro-story:

  • “Yesterday, I rewrote an AI-generated email. It doubled conversions. Here’s what I changed…”

  • “I made a mistake with AI last week. A big one. Learn from this…”

This tiny shift makes your writing 3x more engaging.

5. Let AI Write a Draft—Then “Break It”

If AI’s writing feels better than yours, don’t ditch it. Distort it.

  • Rewrite one sentence in your own voice.

  • Add a personal experience.

  • Delete the first paragraph and start mid-thought.

Make it your own.

Bottom Line: AI Isn’t the Writer. You Are.

AI is a tool, not a storyteller.

If you prefer its writing over your own, it’s not because it’s better—it’s because it’s safer. More polished. Less risky.

But safe writing doesn’t make an impact.

The best copy? The best emails? The best books? They’re messy, unpredictable, and deeply human.

And you, my friend, are the only one who can write like you.

Now go prove it.
